Strategy 14 - Implement a coordinated domestic violence (DV) initiative

Recently, the Erase Domestic Crime Collaborative, comprised of community organizations including the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission and the Family Safety Center, hosted an event to bring about awareness of Domestic Violence in our community and its affects on children. As stated in the press conference by Professor Richard Janikowski of the University of Memphis Center for Community Criminology and Research "in Memphis and Shelby County, nearly 55,000 children aged 5-17 will potentially have exposure to domestic violence."

Also, in a Commercial Appeal article, Chris Peck wrote "to crack the cycle of domestic violence and abuse requires an all-encompassing 'wraparound' approach." To view his full article recapping the evening's event click here Chris Peck: The undertow of domestic violence.

Strategy 12 - Implement a proactive and coordinated "problem properties" system

Mayor A C Wharton recently invigorated a “Campaign to End Blight” in our community suing 138 owners of dilapidated properties just the other day through the Neighborhood Preservation Act.

Beth Flanagan, Executive Director of the Memphis Medical Center has also successfully used the Neighborhood Preservation Act to target neglected properties in the downtown medical district. Ms. Flanagan will be our guest on Live @ 9, November 2nd at 9 a.m.

The Juvenile Court of Memphis and Shelby County recently celebrated 100 years of service with a three-day celebration. A 5K run, continuing legal education seminar and a documentary about the   court’s storied past all received an overwhelming community response.
